12,860 shoeboxes left Guildford warehouse last week, packed into a lorry destined for Bosnia. The busy team were over the moon, having reached their target by sending an extra 760 boxes. Area Coordinator, Carolyn Gercke sums up the special moment, “It was very moving to see our lorry load go from Guildford. This was the first time we’ve done that, so it was really exciting!”

The last few weeks have been non-stop for the Guildford crowd, with visits from all sorts of groups, interested in checking out the fun to be had in a processing centre. Ten children from a special needs school turned up with 92 shoeboxes and unloaded them amidst shrieks of laughter.

“It took three of us together with their five teachers to chaperone them around the warehouse,” explained Carolyn. “They were absolutely thrilled with what they saw and so were their teachers. One of them remarked that she would pass on knitting patterns to her Mum and get her knitting for next year!”

As they left, another new family arrived to help; Mum, Dad and daughter. During the training session it emerged that they were in fact refugees from Bosnia and had come to England with nothing six years ago. Here they were checking shoeboxes to send back out to a land they had had to flee from. Amazing!

Carolyn’s final comments sum the last few weeks up perfectly, “It never ceases to amaze me who God can reach through these extremely busy weeks when we check the shoeboxes!”
