Kathleen Dover and her team of volunteers from the International Christian Fellowship endured a day of icy winds outside the Borehamwood Tesco superstore yesterday. Yet spirits were high as they encouraged hundreds of shoppers to take part in Operation Christmas Child.
Large photos of children, a table of great gift ideas and a shopping trolley wrapped in Christmas paper attracted numerous people as they headed into Tesco’s. For many shoppers it was the first time they had heard about the shoebox campaign and were amazed to hear they could help out for as little as 10p with a bar of soap.

One lady was thrilled to hear about the chance to buy some gifts for children in need overseas. Coming out of Tesco after shopping, she emptied a bag full of girly toys into the trolley. “I have two boys,” she laughed, “so it’s wonderful to get the chance to buy toys for girls!”
Marion Naylor, Community Champion at Tesco has worked for the store for 24 years and is so excited to not only advertise Operation Christmas Child but also take part herself. From encouraging colleagues to donate items, to visiting the warehouse to help with processing the shoeboxes, Marion has played a valuable role in encouraging even more people to get involved in wrapping and packing shoeboxes.

Last year the team in Borehamwood sent over 15,000 shoeboxes and this year they’re aiming to send 20,000 to Mozambique. After seeing their enthusiasm and commitment to Operation Christmas Child they are certain to hit this figure.
